Kotaku final fantasy xv1/6/2023 ![]() That game had FIVE tears of full-blown development of a team of over 200, practically working on one game and releasing nothing for the span of that 5 years. It's something that is easy to misinterpret and make all sorts of wrong/right assumptions. The problem is that it's hard to contextualise a lot of these development hell issues. Youkai Watch, Monster Hunter and PazuDora's insane success are not things that can be replicated just because you put your heart at it. It's not impossible, but it's definitely extremely hard. Sure, Sony could start now ( with Bloodborne, etc), but those would be new IPs in a shrinking market, and it'd be a very difficult challenge to overcome to get new brands out there and draw significant attention to it. ![]() Gran Turismo and Everybody's Golf are the only two IPs that are successful in Japan, and it's also debatable that games in those genres have passed their peak. Those IPs only declined further whereas competitors IPs nourished. Wild Arms, Dark Chronicles, Arc the Lad, Rogue Galaxy, Sony jumped from IP to IP, and honestly, it never felt like they ever tried to make them fully competitive with the best games out in the market that day. One of Sony's bigger fuck-ups (all the way back from the PS1 era) was that they utterly failed to build a healthy amount of long-lasting brands and compelling content for the Japanese market.
